Spider Vein Sclerotherapy
Although spider veins are generally a cosmetic-issue, in some cases, they can still be an indication of an underlying problem that may need treatment. Whether it’s for cosmetic or health needs, the surgeons at Central Florida Vein and Vascular Center may recommend spider vein sclerotherapy for the treatment of the affected veins. Here’s what to expect from this procedure conveniently completed at any of our three offices: Ocoee, Kissimmee, or The Villages.

Spider Vein Sclerotherapy Treatment Options
Sclerotherapy is the oldest and most common form of treatment for spider veins. This form of therapy has been effective in lessening the appearance of spider veins and allowing patients to feel confident in their legs post-treatment.
What is Sclerotherapy?
During sclerotherapy, a specialist injects a sclerosing agent into the affected vein. When the agent comes into contact with the veins, it irritates the vein vessels which causes them to scar and become less visible. Spider vein sclerotherapy does not remove the vein itself—it diminishes the vein’s appearance. Following the procedure, you will have healthier appearing veins.
Why Central Florida Vein and Vascular Center?
All of our procedures are minimally invasive—meaning you’ll find no painful vein stripping here. If the thought of treatment recovery time or costs is keeping you away from the vein care you deserve, don’t worry. Vein care is more affordable than you might think. Most insurance companies cover an initial consultation, so you can gain a full understanding of your current venous health. You’ll be happy to hear that treatment itself is sometimes covered by insurance as well.

Generally, our patients don’t experience pain during their sclerotherapy treatment. All you’ll feel is a needle pinch. In some cases, you may have mild cramping near the injection site, especially for larger veins.
You may also experience mild discomfort or side effects afterward like bruising, headaches, skin discoloration or tenderness.
Sclerotherapy results are permanent. Once your varicose or spider veins collapse and are reabsorbed by your body, they will not come back.
However, it is important to remember other veins can develop over time. Once you have had troublesome veins, you are more likely over time to develop a recurrence. Recurrences usually only require a small amount of treatment.
There are a few potential side effects of sclerotherapy including allergic reactions, hyperpigmentation, injection site pain, blood clots, inflammation, and air bubbles.
Your doctor should provide you with a list of items you should avoid before and after sclerotherapy. However, some of the common items to avoid both 48 hours before treatment and 48 hours after treatment include over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, and lotion.
