What Is a Diagnostic Vascular Ultrasound?

Diagnostic vascular ultrasounds for varicose veins are non-invasive exams that allow our specialists to view and analyze the current state of your venous health. An ultrasound specialist will use a probe that emits sound waves to capture internal images on the screen.

Central Florida Vein & Vascular Center performs a thorough examination that looks at both the deep and superficial vein systems as well as measuring the size of the superficial veins and the amount of venous reflux or reversed flow present.  This analysis helps in the diagnosis of venous insufficiency but also in determining the severity.  This exam is performed in an outpatient setting and only takes less than an hour to determine how well the vein valves in your legs are working to circulate blood throughout your body. After a diagnostic ultrasound, our specialists can determine which treatment options will fit your needs.

What Are the Signs of Needing a Varicose Vein Ultrasound?

Patients are normally scheduled for this minimally invasive exam after reaching out to discuss these symptoms:

These symptoms, as well as other cosmetic concerns due to venous problems, are treatable through specialized care. Although, venous issues are not always cosmetic. Seeking a proper diagnosis and treatment early can save you from struggling with other health problems later.

What to Expect for Your Diagnostic Ultrasound Appointment

Vascular ultrasounds require very minimal preparation ahead of time. Wear or bring shorts to your ultrasound examination as we will need to examine both legs in their entirety. ..

A vascular ultrasound is similar — if not the same — to other ultrasound procedures. A specialist will ask you to lie on an examination table, and they will apply a lubricating gel to the affected area. From there, they will move a probe around the site on your leg and take images of the results. When it’s over, you can return to your regular day and activities. Our office will contact you with the results and recommended treatment plan.
