An ankle flare is a small spiderlike pattern of veins inside and outside the ankle and foot. This common condition is generally a sign of a larger health issue and should receive treatment as soon as possible.

At Central Florida Vein and Vascular Center, we offer effective treatment plans to reduce the symptoms of ankle flare to help you feel and look your best. From the moment you enter our office, we will take the time to listen to your concerns and involve you in every step of the treatment process. We are proud to be a leading resource for vein and vascular care, and we look forward to helping you.

What Causes Ankle Flare?

An ankle flare is often an early sign of venous disease, which is a common condition where the vein walls become damaged and cause the blood to collect and flow toward the feet instead of the heart. As more blood flows toward the feet, pressure begins to build in the veins, causing them to stretch and twist and create a spiderlike appearance that is common in ankle flare.

How Do You Treat Ankle Flare?

The treatment you receive for ankle flare venous insufficiency will depend on your condition’s severity. If you notice a swelling in your legs, our specialists at Central Florida Vein and Vascular may offer compression therapy as a conservative treatment option.

During compression therapy, you will use a pair of compression stockings that are tight around the ankle and become looser higher on the leg. You will wear your stockings daily to help reduce swelling while assisting blood flow.

We also offer noninvasive treatment options such as sclerotherapy and endovenous laser therapy. During sclerotherapy, one of our specialists will inject a sclerosing agent into the affected vein on your ankle. Once the agent comes into contact with the vein, it will cause it to scar and become less visible. Endovenous laser therapy treatment follows a similar process in that a specialist will insert a small catheter and apply heat to cause the vein to seal shut.

Sclerotherapy and endovenous laser therapy help create healthy blood flow and improve the appearance of your legs.
