Dr. Horowitz Gifts Temple University

Central Florida Vein and Vascular founder John D. Horowitz has provided a generous philanthropic gift of $150,000 to the Temple Department of Surgery.

With this donation Temple University’s The Lewis Katz School of Medicine has created an endowed fund known as the John D. Horowitz, M.D. Endowed Lectureship for the Advancement of Physician Resilience and Wellbeing.

Dr. Horowitz attended Temple University School of Medicine in Pennsylvania, graduating from the  Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and completing his residency training in Surgery. Dr. Horowitz credits his time at Temple as an essential part of what made him an effective practitioner.

Dr. Horowitz valued the excellent clinical training, team environment, and mentorship opportunities offered to younger residents. His gift will go to support this learning environment to support young practitioners to succeed.

Dr. Horowitz is a passionate supporter of those pursuing a career in the medical field and he explains the importance of his gift beyond the monetary value when it comes to patient-centered care:

“The health and wellbeing of doctors has been ignored forever and is a significant source of physician burnout, job dissatisfaction, and poor doctor patient relationships.  It’s never been OK as a doctor to have personal needs since it takes the focus away from the patient.  Unfortunately, if physicians are not emotionally, physically, and spiritually healthy themselves it makes patient centered medicine so difficult.  The goal of this lectureship is to give training physicians and surgeons a vision that self-care is not selfish and that it is essential to effective and compassionate care.”

His donation will provide support for biannual lectures in physical wellness at the Department of Surgery. Lectures will feature physician wellness professionals with expertise in evidence-based practices, including:

  • narrative practice,
  • mindfulness,
  • And self-care.

Each lecture will incorporate a short introduction featuring reflections from mentor physicians and how they overcame personal challenges in Medicine as well as research findings.
