Men’s Health Week: Keeping Veins Healthy

Men’s Health Week started on June 10th — and, as the best vascular surgeons in Orlando at Central Florida Vein & Vascular Center, we would like men to understand that varicose veins are an issue they should pay attention to. It is important for men to understand the benefit of taking proper care of their vein health. Although many men are not as concerned about the cosmetic side of varicose veins, bulging, varicose or spider veins can be an indication of a leg vein problem that needs to be addressed. At Central Florida Vein and Vascular, we focus on the root causes of varicose veins, and by doing so help our patients have healthier legs. It is a wonderful benefit that these treatments also improve the aesthetics of our patients’ legs.

Men and Varicose Veins

Why is it important for men to take care of their veins? Let’s first look at how varicose veins form. Everyone’s veins have valves that are responsible for properly circulating blood through the body. However, these valves can become weak over time. This is problematic in the lower leg, where veins have to work extra hard to push blood upward and against gravity. If veins aren’t strong enough, blood will pool in the lower leg and create a varicose vein. These veins can be dark blue in color and appear to be bulging just under the skin’s surface.

Varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic concern. They can cause legs to feel painful, heavy, restless, or itchy. And they can worsen over time, increasing men’s risk of developing venous ulcers or a blood clot.

Maintaining Men’s Vein Health

Varicose veins can impact men of all ages but there are certain risk factors to watch out for. These include your age, overall activity level, weight, and family history of varicose veins. That said, there is still plenty that men can do to help their veins stay in top shape.

Exercise is one of the best ways to keep your veins strong. This doesn’t mean you have to spend hours in the gym; something as small as a daily walk can prove beneficial. But if you’re looking for something intensive, you can try biking, spending time on an elliptical, or working equipment-free leg exercises into your routine. Whatever you do, remember that movement throughout the day is key! Standing or sitting for long periods of time puts excess strain on the veins, so get up and move throughout the day when you have the chance.

Watching your diet can also aid your overall vein health. Try incorporating more fiber and Vitamin C and E into your diet, while keeping your salt intake low. And, of course, remember to drink enough water throughout the day — your veins and overall health will thank you.

Seeking Treatment

If you already have varicose veins, seeking treatment is easy and takes less of your time than you may think. Modern vein treatment is minimally invasive and is done as an outpatient procedure. Many patients also return to work the next day, depending on how much strain their job puts on their veins.
